Cyst Removal

Sebaceous Cyst

What is a sebaceous cyst?
A sebaceous cyst is a benign, slow-growing growth that results from injury to a hair follicle in association with acne, a defect in the skin, or injury to the skin beneath the skin surface. The cysts contain a cheesy, yellow material, and rupturing them releases the cheesy material into the skin, producing redness, tenderness, and swelling.

Sebaceous CystWhere are sebaceous cysts commonly found on the body?
They usually develop on acne-prone areas of the face, neck, and upper trunk. Cysts can also be found on the scrotum, behind the ears, and on the scalp. They typically don't appear on fingers, palms, or soles of the feet. Miniature sebaceous cysts can develop in skin that is injured or scraped.

Are there any problems or complications associated with sebaceous cysts?
The main problem is simply cosmetic issues. Ruptured cysts can cause skin scarring and discomfort, but they rarely develop into associated skin cancer.  A major concern, though, comes from growths that appear to be benign epidermoid cysts, but are actually more aggressive skin tumors.

sebaceous cystWhat is the minimal excision technique?

It's a simple and effective method that removes the cyst wall and the cheesy material inside the cyst. A tiny cut is made in the skin, and the cyst contents are squeezed out. The cyst wall is pulled through the skin opening, which is so small that stitches usually aren't necessary. If the entire cyst wall is removed, the growth usually won't reappear.

Is the minimal excision technique always successful in removing the cyst wall?

The doctor may not be able to pull the cyst wall through the skin opening. Cysts that have been inflamed or previously ruptured may have extensive scarring around the cyst wall and be more difficult to remove. A more extensive surgical procedure may be needed if this happens.
