Outside the office, Dr. Shu dedicates his time to community activism. After forming the Minnesota Chinese Physician Association (AMCP) in 2003, he led its members and community volunteers in establishing the Minnesota Chinese Health Center (MCHC), a free clinic for disadvantaged Chinese in the Twin Cities. In recent years, Dr. Shu joined an international medical mission team to the Philippines and Haiti as part of a global effort to promote and provide free No-Scalpel Vasectomy services to reduce poverty in developing countries facing rapid population growth.
Dr.Shu joined the Philippines medical mission project in February 2015. Ten guest vasectomists and four helpers from six countries (United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Poland, Ireland) shared their skills and knowledge with disadvantaged families in Cebu, Danao and Tuburan in the Philippines, medical students at Southwestern University College of Medicine, and six doctors visiting from Davao, Mindanao.
